EVENT DESCRIPTION: BITS Pilani - Hyderabad's Literary Fest
The English Language Activities' Society of Birla Institute of Technology and Science Pilani, Hyderabad invites you to the second edition of the BITS Literary Fest, Verba Maximus '13.
Verba Maximus is the Literary Festival of BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus, and is organized by the college's English Language Activities Society (ELAS).
After the grand success of VM '12 with over 400 off campus participation, ELAS has decided to take it one step higher including more events, better cash prizes and better participation.
Verba Maximus aims to provide a platform to not just the best debaters and writers to showcase their talents but also for enthusiasts to improve. With a wide range of events and a wider range of informal events aiming to keep you entertained through out the fest Verba Maximus 2013 is something you do not want to miss.
Every artist needs a platform to showcase what lies in his or her malfunctioning and weird but intensely creative mind. Literary fests provide the wordsmiths a platform. The capability to pour words at accurate intervals, to know when to bring in the tide and when to stop the storm of words is a kind of superpower. So if you possess this superpower and can use it in a composition or speech, BPHC invites you to Verba Maximus 2013, the literary fest of BITS Pilani-Hyderabad Campus.
VM introduced stand-up comedy to the campus, Sorabh Pant of the East India Co.medy performed and people laughed their guts out.
This year we expect VM to go big. The events will be held under two categories - speaking and writing. The speaking events include JAM, debate and GD. The Writing events will include poetry, story-writing and script-writing. Apart from this we have a literary quiz, treasure hunt and a lot of informal events like scrabble, hangman etc. We are also working on holding an event on investigative journalism. Our Spell Bee is being endorsed by the Indian Spell Bee, giving it a very high standard.
The highlight events will be a seminar by the bestselling author of the Shiva Trilogy, Amish Tripathi. Probably he will give us a sneak peek of his third book. The second event is again a stand-up comedy show by Sorabh Pant and his crew of East India Co.medy. (There will be a lot of food too.)
So the 19th and 20th January of 2013 will be two days of metaphors, soliloquies, stammer, writer's block, masterpiece and all other nouns that deal with a literary holding. So become a part of Verba Maximus, showcase your skills, learn from Amish Tripathi and ROFL with Sorabh Pant. You are welcome!
Registration fee for participating in all the events for two days is ₹150. No additional registration is required for any other event. This fee does not include accommodation or food. Registration for Sorabh Pant's comedy show is charged separately at ₹150.

The Big Fight
Argument is the name of the day! Forget the issue of shunning your ego and engross in a fierce battle to prove your point. Defend tactically, attack fiercely and embrace the power of domination. This is a war of words, so confidently convince your opponent and make sure that the judgement is on your side. So get ready to battle in the debate, the verba-maximus style!
Team of 2
You will be judged individually in the finals.
Round 1 - The classic debate with all its flair (and a few modifications)
Round 2 - Be ready to be shot at with questions)
Gone In 60 Seconds
A Sixty Second battle to test your spontaneity, speed, perception and language. Dance to the tunes of the JAM Master as you put to test your adaptability. Look out with a hawk's eye to prey upon your opponents follies and seize every chance to speak your mind.
Mod is God.
See rule 1.
Candidates are divided in groups of 6 to 10 and each group is tested by a panel of Judges.
Usually a topic of general interest is given by the panel to the group which is asked to proceed with discussion.
Every candidate is supposed to express his opinion and views on the topic given.
The time for discussion is approximately 20 minutes.
During the discussion, the panel of Judges quietly observes the performance and behavior of the candidates and makes its own assessment. Each candidate gets an approximate of 5 minutes to collect his ideas before the start of the group discussion.
Rules: (Included above)
Every Picture has a story to tell. This is a test for your perception, imagination and creativity. Look at the picture and concoct a story. So, bring out the real story teller in you.
A picture is shown to the group of participants and they individually have to try to frame the story depicted by the picture.
Symphonies Of The Soul
Let music be your pen as you lyric the symphony. Just sit back and listen to the rhapsody played, lose yourself, get mesmerized, slip into the realm the symphony creates, wake up from the trance and create magic; the magic of words. An instrumental is played after which participants will have to write lyrics for the same.
This short writing event is something which you will not love to miss out on. An abstract end (short phrase) will be provided and one needs to come up with a short situation or a story apt to the given phrase. Showcase your creativity by presenting the best story to a given ending.
Can you depict a scenario in an unbiased manner? Can you join the dots to open your readers' minds to the endless possibilities? Can you uncover, weasel out, or even filch information from those around you? Are you ready to join perhaps the most exciting realm of journalism?
