After many years last two sessions had seen change in campus placement trend. Students at IITs and IIMs are now queuing for PSUs which was not the case for last many years. This change in trend may attribute to high rise in salaries in PSUs after 6th pay commission and ongoing recessionary phase (now in recovery phase).
Coal India (CIL) has hired 631 freshers from the prestigious IITs and IIMs in the current placement season, about double the number it hired last season. “We have hired 631 professionals this year from leading institutes like IITs, IIMs,” Coal India chairman Partha S Bhattacharyya said. Last year, the firm had recruited 343 management trainees. The fresh recruits have been offered an annual pay packet of around Rs 6 lakh.
The Navratna PSU, at present, has a workforce of 3.97 lakh, out of which around 15,000 are executives and the rest are miners. The company had earlier said its workforce is likely to come down to 3.80 lakh by 2011. The world's largest coal producer maintained that it has not undertaken any job cuts in the past, nor is it planning to undertake any such measures in the near future.
However, it plans to redeploy its miners to more productive mines and also shut down mining operations at some of the unviable locations.
